Summer Holidays in Slovenia

“The Sunny Side of the Alps” - Summer in Slovenia stretches over 7 months blending nicely with spring and autumn. Slovenia’s alpine climate is strongly affected by the southern winds, coming from the nearby Adriatic coast. Therefore making average temperatures higher than other European alpine areas. April and May have mild and long sunny days – the first signs of spring normally appearing in the middle of March. June, July and August boast long and sunny days with the daytime temperature reaching mid twenties.

During the evenings short and sharp thunderstorms are a regular occurrence – keeping the ground lush and green. September and October are still mild with cooler mornings and evenings.
An ideal place for walking, rambling, hiking, trekking and outdoor activities. Slovenia has a wonderful variety of terrain from lovely gentle valleys - striding out alongside lazy crystal clear rivers, hiking on the scenic and breathtaking trails and fauna filled meadows of the Triglav National Park, summiting a selection of towering and challenging peaks in the high Julian Alps to trekking hut to hut in any of the three contrasting mountain ranges: Slovenia “A Tailor-made outdoors heaven”

Walking is excellent throughout the year – an abundance of flowers in May and June (some only to be found in Slovenia – over 3800 varieties). Wonderful valley and meadow walks in mid summer and in September and October the amazing colours of the fall, Slovenia having over 58% of the country forest/green with 28 different trees. A variety of walks and rambles can be found!

June through until October is the main hiking period in Slovenia. The snow has gone from the 2000m peaks, the weather is stable and the mountain trails being some of the most peaceful and unsaturated in Europe. One thing you will notice whilst on the trails in the Julian Alps, National Park or Karavanke Range is the peace and quite, the feeling of being with nature. Slovenia is an undiscovered country so therefore the mountains are unsaturated and not over populated with hikers. A wonderful feeling of discovering the undiscovered European alpine trails.

“A lightweight experience” - In the words of TRAIL magazine writer Ben Winston. Slovene huts are like mountain hostels, all catered and bedded. So no need to carry lots of food, cooking equipment or sleeping bags. The three mountain ranges offer an excellent variety of easy 2 day to challenging 7 day treks.

Slovenia has a wide range of well-managed ski centres and other resorts offering opportunities for active leisure time enjoyment throughout the year.

The biggest winter sports centre is Kranjska Gora with over 30 km of alpine pistes and more than 40 km of cross-country ski trails. Another well-known centre is the Maribor Pohorje near Maribor, which every year stages World Cup competitions and boasts 60 km of ski slopes and 25 km of cross-country trails. The ski resorts on Kanin are as high as 2,300 metres and skiing is possible there even in summer. Other popular resorts are Vogel, Zreče Pohorje, Rogla, Krvavec, the alpine resort of Straža in Bled and the cross-country skiing centre at Pokljuka near Bled. Of course, skiing is not the only sport for which Slovenia is ideal. There are also 11 flying centres, several paragliding, hang-gliding and ballooning clubs and associations. Slovenia has already hosted world championships in gliding, parachuting and paragliding, as well as European ballooning championships.

The Adriatic is ideal for swimming and windsurfing and there are also a number of marinas on the coast. Divers can make for the sea and the lakes, and the Soča, Krka and Kolpa rivers attract many canoeists and rafters. There are several equestrian clubs around Slovenia. The country’s well-maintained footpaths include mountain paths and European trails.

Cycling is possible almost everywhere. Mountain rivers, peaceful waters, karst streams, lakes and reservoirs are a delight for anglers and fly-fishers. Slovenia has 8 golf courses, the oldest being the Bled golf course which opened in 1938. There are other attractive golf courses at Lipica, Mokrice and Volčji potok Arboretum. The newest Slovenian golf courses can be found at the Moravske toplice health spa, Terme Olimia, Slovenske Konjice and in Ptuj.

Imposing but accessible mountain beauties invite you to experience the Julian Alps, the Karavanke Mountains, the Kamniško-Savinjske Alps and many solitary peaks. According to an old Slavic legend, Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak (2864 m), is a three headed-god who keeps a watchful eye over the earth, the sky and the underworld.

Bovec - situated in the heart of the picturesque Soca River valley is known as a place where the world’s best kayakers and canoeists compete nowadays often mentioned as the ADRENALINE CENTRE OF SLOVENIA.
